What is the “Jesus Seminar”?
PDF Print E-mail

The “Jesus Seminar” is another quest for the Real Jesus or Historical Jesus. It was founded in 1985 by Robert W. Funk and John Dominic Crossan and its eighty or so “fellows” who have been meeting twice a year from 1985 to 1996, in order to assess the authenticity of all the sayings attributed to Jesus. The fellows are a group of theologians whose views about the Gospels are far to the left. To identify the real sayings of Jesus, they have used a color code: red for undoubtedly authentic sayings, pink for those that are probably so, gray for sayings that are not authentic but close, and black for those that ate not authentic at all, but a later addition from the early Christian traditions. Later they turned from an examination of the words of Jesus to his works. According to their conclusion, 82% of the words ascribed to Jesus in the Gospels were not actually spoken by him. They also have also included the Apocryphal Gospel of Thomas along with the four canonical Gospels. Their Research has produced two controversial books:

  1. The Five Gospels: What Did Jesus really Say? The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus
  2. The Acts of Jesus: What did Jesus Really Do? The Search for the Authentic Deeds of Jesus

The conclusions of the “fellows” are foolish, largely subjective based upon their radical liberal theological system. “….they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:21-22). “Why search for Jesus when he was never lost?”
